MODI Remote Connected but Not Working on iPhone

If your Anki remote shows as connected on iPhone but does nothing in AnkiMobile, the problem is usually between Bluetooth pairing and AnkiMobile’s gamepad action mapping. For MODI, the standard iPhone setup uses Switch Mode, not desktop Keyboard Mode. A Bluetooth connection only proves that iOS recognizes a controller profile; AnkiMobile still needs focused review screen access and assigned gamepad actions before button presses control cards.

Start by checking three things in order: the remote mode, the AnkiMobile mapping, and whether AnkiMobile is the active app in a review screen. MODI is an independent Bluetooth accessory, not an official Anki or Apple product, so setup depends on how iOS and AnkiMobile interpret its inputs. If those pieces disagree, the remote can look paired while still appearing unresponsive during reviews.

Confirm Switch Mode

For iPhone and iPad, MODI’s standard mobile path is Switch Mode because it exposes gamepad-style inputs for apps that support them. Put the remote into Switch Mode by opening iPhone Bluetooth settings, holding Y + Home for one second, and selecting the MODI connection. After a successful Switch Mode connection, the center LED should become solid blue. A solid connection in another mode may not provide the inputs AnkiMobile expects.

If you previously paired the same remote in Keyboard Mode or with another device, do not assume the iPhone has refreshed the profile cleanly. Bluetooth settings can retain older entries, and AnkiMobile will only respond to the inputs it can see through iOS. When in doubt, remove saved MODI or Anki remote entries from Bluetooth settings, then pair again directly into Switch Mode. Map AnkiMobile Actions

After the iPhone shows the remote as connected in Switch Mode, open AnkiMobile and go to Settings, then Review, then Gamepads. Assign the buttons to the review actions you want. This step is separate from Bluetooth pairing. iOS can recognize a controller while AnkiMobile has not yet been told which input should reveal an answer, choose a rating, undo, replay audio, or trigger another available study action.

If a button press is visible in the mapping screen but does not do what you expected during review, treat that as a configuration issue first. Reopen the Gamepads settings and verify each assigned action against the button you intend to use. AnkiMobile provides its own configurable action list, so do not copy desktop-only assumptions directly. MODI supplies the input; AnkiMobile decides what that input means inside its review workflow.

Check App Focus

A connected remote cannot control AnkiMobile if the app is not the active foreground app or if you are not on a screen that accepts the mapped action. Return to the review screen, tap inside AnkiMobile if needed, and test a simple mapped action such as revealing the answer or choosing Good. If iOS focus is elsewhere, button presses may be ignored by AnkiMobile even though Bluetooth still reports connected.

Also check whether you are testing from a menu, deck list, browser view, or another screen where the mapped review action is not available. A command that makes sense during card review may not have an effect elsewhere. This distinction matters because it can make the remote look broken when the current AnkiMobile view is simply not listening for that specific gamepad action. Move to an active review card before judging the pairing.

Forget and Re-pair

When the remote is connected but still inactive after mode and mapping checks, use a clean forget-and-repair cycle. In iPhone Bluetooth settings, forget every saved MODI or Anki remote entry you see. Then wake the remote, enter Switch Mode again with Y + Home for one second, and select the new MODI connection. This clears stale pairing information that can survive ordinary reconnect attempts.

This same process is the preferred starting point when moving MODI from another phone, tablet, or computer to the iPhone. Pressing Home wakes and reconnects the remote in its last-used mode, which is convenient after a correct setup but confusing after switching devices or modes. Forgetting old entries removes that ambiguity. If the remote connects after the clean pairing, return to AnkiMobile’s Gamepads settings and confirm the action assignments again.

Restart if Needed

If MODI pairs freshly in Switch Mode, shows the expected blue LED, and has mapped actions in AnkiMobile but still does not respond, restart the iPhone and try again. That is a reasonable next diagnostic step because host-device Bluetooth state can affect input handling. The issue is not automatically the remote, and it is not automatically AnkiMobile. Treat the connection path as several layers that must align.

Before restarting, also make sure the remote is awake and not sitting idle long enough to sleep. MODI automatically sleeps after about 2.5 minutes without a Bluetooth connection or 5 minutes of inactivity. Press Home to wake and reconnect in the last-used mode. Read the Signals

Use the LEDs only for the meanings documented for MODI. In this iPhone problem, the most relevant signal is the center LED becoming solid blue after a successful Switch Mode connection. A quickly flashing red LED indicates low battery, charging flashes green, and the charging LED turns off when charging is complete. Do not infer a battery percentage or hidden error code from other light behavior during AnkiMobile troubleshooting.

Decorative lighting is separate from the Bluetooth and gamepad mapping problem. You can double-click the Light button to turn decorative lighting on or off, but that does not assign AnkiMobile actions or change Switch Mode. For the most practical troubleshooting path, keep attention on the mode, the iPhone Bluetooth entry, AnkiMobile’s Gamepads settings, and the active review screen. Once those are aligned, test one mapped action before adding more buttons.
