MODI Remote iOS Troubleshooting Checklist

If your MODI Anki remote is not working with AnkiMobile on iPhone or iPad, troubleshoot in this order: battery, Switch Mode, Bluetooth cleanup, then AnkiMobile gamepad mapping. MODI is an independent Bluetooth accessory, not an official Anki or Apple product, so both the remote state and iOS app settings can affect response. Start with the simple checks before changing every control, because a stale pairing or wrong mode can look like a button failure.

This checklist focuses on the standard iOS workflow: MODI in Switch Mode, recognized by iOS as a controller profile, then assigned inside AnkiMobile’s Gamepads settings. Battery

Charge the remote before deeper troubleshooting, especially if the LED flashes red quickly. That pattern means low battery. While charging, the LED flashes green; when charging is complete, the charging LED turns off. Do not infer a battery percentage from other light behavior, because the manual does not define one. MODI uses a 3.7 V, 330 mAh battery, and Bluetooth instability is harder to diagnose when the charge state is uncertain.

If the remote seemed active earlier but will not reconnect, remember that it can sleep automatically after about 2.5 minutes without a Bluetooth connection or 5 minutes of inactivity. Press Home to wake it and reconnect in the last-used mode. You can also hold Home for 3 seconds to manually sleep or turn off the remote, then wake it again before pairing. Keep decorative lights off when they are not needed to preserve practical battery life.

Mode

For AnkiMobile on iPhone and iPad, use Switch Mode. Hold Y + Home for one second while Bluetooth settings are open, then select the MODI connection when it appears. A successful Switch Mode connection shows a solid blue center LED. Keyboard Mode is intended for desktop use with preset keybindings, and its solid green connection indicator does not represent the normal iOS gamepad setup for AnkiMobile review controls.

If the LED color suggests the wrong mode, do not simply toggle buttons inside AnkiMobile. iOS may still remember the previous Bluetooth profile, and AnkiMobile can only map the inputs that iOS exposes. When changing modes, forget every saved MODI or Anki remote entry in Bluetooth settings, then repeat the full Switch Mode pairing steps. This same cleanup is the preferred starting point when moving the remote from another phone, tablet, or computer.

Bluetooth

Open iOS Bluetooth settings and remove saved MODI entries before pairing again. Look for any remote names that may represent earlier attempts, especially if you previously tried Keyboard Mode or paired the device to a different host. After forgetting them, start fresh from the remote powered on and awake. Pair using Y + Home for Switch Mode, then wait for the solid blue center LED before opening AnkiMobile to test review controls.

If iOS says the remote is connected but AnkiMobile does not respond after a fresh pairing, restart the iPhone or iPad and try again. This does not prove the remote is defective; host Bluetooth state, saved pairings, battery state, and app configuration can all affect the result. After the restart, confirm that only the intended current MODI entry is connected, then continue with AnkiMobile’s own gamepad settings instead of repeatedly pairing without testing.

Gamepads

In AnkiMobile, open Settings, then Review, then Gamepads. Assign the actions you want from the list AnkiMobile provides. MODI in Switch Mode exposes gamepad-style inputs, while AnkiMobile decides which review actions those inputs trigger. Keep this distinction clear: MODI sends controller input, iOS recognizes the profile, and AnkiMobile maps that input to review behavior. A Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee every button already has your preferred action.

Test one simple action first, such as revealing an answer or choosing Good, before mapping every button. Press the MODI button, confirm AnkiMobile records or performs the intended gamepad action, then continue one control at a time. If one assignment works and another does not, the problem is more likely an app mapping choice than a Bluetooth failure. If no input registers in the Gamepads screen, return to battery, mode, and Bluetooth cleanup steps.

Scope

Avoid applying desktop instructions to this iOS problem. The optional MODI desktop add-on is for desktop Anki customization, and it is not required for the standard AnkiMobile Switch Mode workflow. On iPhone or iPad, the useful diagnostic question is whether iOS sees the Switch Mode controller input and whether AnkiMobile has assigned it to an action.
