To wake a MODI Anki remote, press Home once. The remote tries to reconnect in the last-used mode, so a controller last paired in Keyboard Mode returns as a keyboard-style device, while one last paired in Switch Mode returns as a gamepad-style device. If the host still has the saved connection and Bluetooth is ready, this is usually the only step needed before returning to review controls in the app you configured.

If the host still has the saved connection and Bluetooth is ready, this is usually the only step needed before returning to review controls in the app you configured.
If pressing Home does not restore control, treat the saved connection as the first thing to check. Bluetooth entries can become stale after mode changes, device moves, or host-side updates. MODI is an independent accessory, not an Anki-made product, so reconnection depends on both the remote and the phone, tablet, or computer accepting the stored pairing. The practical fallback is to forget the saved MODI entry and pair again in the mode you actually need.
What Home Does
Home is the wake and reconnect button for normal use. After the remote has slept, pressing Home wakes it and asks the previous host to resume the last Bluetooth profile it used. This matters because MODI has separate connection modes. Keyboard Mode is intended for desktop use with preset key inputs, while Switch Mode exposes gamepad-style inputs commonly used for mobile app configuration. Home does not choose a new mode; it resumes the previous one.
That distinction prevents a common troubleshooting mistake. If the remote was last connected in Switch Mode, pressing Home will not turn it into a Keyboard Mode device for desktop Anki. If it was last connected in Keyboard Mode, pressing Home will not make it appear as a gamepad for AnkiMobile or AnkiDroid. To change modes, you need to clear saved Bluetooth entries and repeat the full pairing steps for the desired mode.
Expected Sleep Behavior
MODI can sleep automatically when it is not connected or not being used. The documented behavior is approximately 2.5 minutes without a Bluetooth connection or 5 minutes of inactivity. This sleep state is separate from the review app. Anki, AnkiMobile, AnkiDroid, or another app may still be open, but the remote has stopped actively maintaining control until it is awakened and accepted by the host Bluetooth system again.
You can also put the remote to sleep manually by holding Home for 3 seconds. That is useful when you are done reviewing or want to avoid leaving the controller active between sessions. When you return, a single Home press is the documented wake action. If the center LED and host Bluetooth state suggest it connected, but buttons still do nothing, move from wake steps to pairing and app-configuration checks.
Check the Saved Connection
A saved connection is the Bluetooth pairing record stored by the computer, phone, or tablet. When it is still valid, MODI can reconnect without repeating setup. If the host shows the remote as connected but review buttons do not respond, confirm that the app is expecting the same input type. Desktop Keyboard Mode sends preset key inputs, while Switch Mode depends on gamepad-style assignments inside the supported app or the desktop add-on workflow.
The saved connection becomes more suspect after switching between Keyboard Mode and Switch Mode, moving MODI to another device, or pairing after a host Bluetooth change. Do not keep tapping buttons indefinitely if nothing responds. Open Bluetooth settings and look for saved MODI or Anki remote entries. If the wrong entry is present, or more than one old entry exists, remove them before creating a fresh pairing. complete MODI setup tutorial covers the full setup sequence.
When to Pair Again
A fresh pairing is the preferred fallback when wake and reconnect do not restore control. Start by forgetting every saved MODI or Anki remote entry in the host device’s Bluetooth settings. Then pair in the mode required for your workflow. For desktop Keyboard Mode, use the Keyboard Mode pairing action. For Switch Mode, use the Switch Mode pairing action. The goal is to give the host one clean record for the correct input profile.
This is especially important when changing from one mode to another. Bluetooth hosts may remember the old profile even when the remote is now being asked to behave differently. Clearing the saved entry forces the phone, tablet, or computer to negotiate the connection again. After pairing, return to the review app and test a simple action, such as reveal or Good, using the controls already configured for that app and mode.
If It Connects but Fails
Sometimes the host reports a successful connection, but the review app still ignores the buttons. That does not prove the remote is defective. The host may have accepted Bluetooth while the app is listening for a different input type, or the app may need its controller settings checked. In desktop Anki, Keyboard Mode uses preset keyboard inputs without requiring the MODI add-on. Custom desktop remapping belongs to the optional add-on workflow instead.
For AnkiMobile on iPhone or iPad and AnkiDroid on Android, the standard MODI mobile setup uses Switch Mode. Those apps provide their own areas for gamepad or key-bind configuration, so the app’s assignments matter after Bluetooth reconnects. If a fresh pairing succeeds but the remote remains unresponsive, the documented next step is to restart the host device and try again, then revisit the app’s control settings for the selected mode.
Avoid Unnecessary Fixes
Reconnection troubleshooting should stay focused on documented behavior. Do not infer battery percentage from light patterns that the manual does not define, and do not open the product or attempt battery repair as a connection fix. A quickly flashing red LED means low battery, charging flashes green, and the charging LED turns off when charging is complete. Decorative lights can be turned off when not needed to support practical battery life.
The shortest reliable sequence is simple: press Home, confirm the last-used mode is the one you need, check the saved Bluetooth connection, then forget and pair again if the host no longer accepts it cleanly. MODI works as an independent Bluetooth accessory, while Anki, AnkiMobile, AnkiDroid, and host operating systems control their own input settings. Keeping those responsibilities separate makes the next step easier to choose.
