MODI is an independent Bluetooth controller for Anki workflows, not an official Anki, AnkiMobile, or AnkiDroid product.

Start With Reveal

Keep Undo reachable, but avoid making it the easiest button to press accidentally during fast review.

A conservative law school layout puts reveal and the four answer ratings in the most predictable positions, with Undo nearby but distinct. That matters for doctrine cards where Good and Easy may have different consequences in your schedule. If a button press feels ambiguous, slow down and confirm the screen state before continuing. The remote is a control surface; it does not decide whether a review choice was substantively right.

Keep Editing Keyboard

Remote review works best for repeated actions, not for rewriting dense legal text. When a card needs a better rule statement, a clearer issue frame, or a narrower fact pattern, use the keyboard and normal Anki editing tools. MODI can help with review inputs, but it is not a substitute for precise typing, citation cleanup, or restructuring a complicated outline-derived card.

A good fallback habit is to suspend or stop on cards that need real edits, then return to the keyboard after the review block. Keyboard Mode includes preset controls such as Suspend, Escape, Spacebar, and direction-key navigation, which can help you move through a desktop session. Still, substantive changes to holdings, exceptions, or policy notes should be made with the normal editor where you can see and type accurately.

Choose Desktop Or Mobile

On macOS, Windows, or Linux desktop review, Keyboard Mode is the simplest starting point when the preset inputs match your needs. Pair from the computer’s Bluetooth settings, use the Keyboard Mode connection process, and confirm that the center LED is solid green after connection. No Anki add-on is required for that default Keyboard Mode workflow, although the MODI add-on is available for desktop users who want custom remapping.

On iPhone, iPad, or Android, use Switch Mode for the standard MODI mobile setup. In AnkiMobile, assign gamepad actions under Settings, Review, Gamepads after iOS recognizes the controller profile. In AnkiDroid, use Settings, Controls, Set Key Binds. AnkiDroid can display X-Y-B-A inputs as Y-X-A-B because of a third-party label mismatch, so judge the final assignment by whether the command works during review.

Check Pairing First

If the remote connects but law school cards do not respond, check the boring parts first. Confirm the correct mode, the app’s control settings, and the saved Bluetooth entry. When changing modes or moving MODI to another phone, tablet, or computer, forget every saved MODI or Anki remote entry in Bluetooth settings, then repeat the full pairing steps for the mode you actually plan to use.
